Ukrainian national anthem (Šče ne vmerla Ukrajiny , in English: Ukraine Is Not Yet Dead). The lyrics of the national anthem of Ukraine constitute a slightly modified version of the first stanza of a patriotic poem written in 1862 by the poet Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer from Kyiv. In 1863, Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Greek-Catholic priest, composed music to accompany Chubynsky’s text.
In 1917 “Ukraine Is Not Yet Dead” song was adopted as the anthem of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, but was banned with its annexation to the Ukrainian SSR in 1920. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was adopted de facto as the anthem of the newborn Ukrainian state and performed on the occasion of the inauguration of the first Ukrainian president, Leonid Kravčuk, on December 5, 1991. In 1996 “Ukraine Is Not Yet Dead” (Šče ne vmerla Ukraïny) song was officially adopted as the Ukrainian national anthem, even if formally only in the melody. In 1998, a draft law was drafted, at the initiative of the Ukrainian cabinet, to indicate an official text of the hymn, as well as the approval of the Molytva za Ukrajinu as the spiritual hymn of the state of Ukraine. On March 6, 2003, the first verse of the hymn was partially modified; if before the incipit was actually «Ukraine is not dead yet, neither her glory nor her freedom», today corresponds to «The glory of Ukraine is not dead yet, nor her freedom».
