German Song

Lili Marleen (or also “Lilly Marlene”, “Lili Marlen”, “Lilli Marlene”, “Lily Marlene”, “Lili Marlène”) is a famous German war love song, translated into countless languages and became famous throughout the world during the Second World War. The original Lyrics of the song Lili Marlene comes from a poem, entitled “Das Lied eines jungen Soldaten auf der Wacht” (The Song of a Young Soldier on Watch) that a German writer and poet from Hamburg, Hans Leip, soldier during the First World War world, he wrote before leaving for the Russian front in 1915. The poem “The Song of a Young Soldier on Watch” was part of a book of poems entitled Die Harfenorgel. Despite the decidedly antiwar character of the poem, the part about Lili Marleen attracted the attention of the musician Norbert Schultze, author of marches and military and propaganda songs, who set it to music in 1938. From 1941 the “Lili Marleen” song was broadcast by the military broadcaster Radio Belgrade, under the Nazi occupation of the radio and the Balkan country, to entertain the German army.

Song Lyrics

Lili Marleen

Traditional German folk song

War love Song

Text translated into English

Right next to the barracks

by the main gate

there stood a lantern

and stands there up to date

We’re going to meet there again

Next to the lantern we will remain

Like then, Lili Marlene

Like then, Lili Marlene

Our casted shadows

appearing as one

and the love we had,

clear to everyone

and to all people that was quite plain

when by the lantern we were stayin’

Like then, Lili Marlene

Like then, Lili Marlene

Already says the sentry,

lights-out’s being called

that can cost you three days,

comrad let’s not get stalled

We said goodnight right there and then

How I would love be with you again

Like then, Lili Marlene

Like then, Lili Marlene

It knows your nice walking,

as you come along

every night it’s burning,

but it forgot me long

And if it comes and I’ll be slain

Who by the lantern will be coming then

With you, Lili Marlene

With you, Lili Marlene

Off the lands of silence,

off the earthly ground

in a dream it lifts me,

your kiss leaves me astound

When the mist of night swirls into reign

There by the lantern I will be again

Like then, Lili Marlene

Like then, Lili Marlene
